Consent is multi-layered. An enthusiastic yes or no isn’t enough. When looking for consent around romantic connection and sexual connection you need three Yeses to take place.
One the “body language yes”. This means a person moves in and welcomes your energy.
That means the person leans in. Their shoulders are loose, the smile touches their eyes. They nod their head with enthusiasm.
They don’t pull away when you step closer. They don’t look scared or annoyed by your advances. You sense a warmth even with those who are nervous they seem to still want to move forward with things
The second is a “verbal yes”
That looks like excitement in someone’s voice as they answer. A “absolutely sure” “What are we waiting for” or “of course” are all definitive Yeses.
The last Yes you should get a “Continued Yes”. Remember consent can be removed in the middle of any activity. Checking in as you’re doing an activity is very necessary. If during the activity you get the same energy back then a Continued yes has been confirmed.
That looks like when kissing you getting kissed back. When hugging the person leans into you. You touching them moans of confirmation take place.
Going slow, being specific and clear about your intentions, and about what you want will allow all parties to walk away feeling enjoyment from the exchange.
